People in parts of England in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the auction of the sails was the preferred method for selling goods and leases. The auction started with the lighting of a candle that started bidding period. The process continued until the last candle went out. The highest bid guaranteed at this point won the auction. It was used from about 1490 to 1893 and is sometimes used even today in ceremonial events. After 1674, it was gradually replaced by English auction. Both types of auctions are ascending open auctions.
The Stockholm Auction House was established in 1674 in Sweden and is widely regarded as the oldest house in the world of the auction.
Shortly after the end of the French Revolution in 1799, wine auctions to be held in taverns, now known as bars and cafes, like coffee, in order to sell art. Such auctions are conducted on a daily basis, and catalogs were printed to publicize the items available for sale. These catalogs normally be printed and distributed before auctions of rare or collectible items such as art, jewelry, stamps, and antique furniture. In some cases these catalogs are elaborate works of art in itself, since they often include detailed descriptions of the elements, its origin, historical significance, photographs, etc.
The world's second largest and third oldest auction house in continuous operation is Sotheby's. It held its first auction in 1744. In fact, the oldest house of the auction is Auktionsverk Stockholm, founded in 1674, while the second oldest is the Uppsala Auktionskammare, founded in 1731.
The world's largest is the auction house Christie's, which specializes in the arts. States official documents of the company founder, James Christie, made the first sale in London on December 5, 1766.
